Dave O’Connell is just another Baby Boomer trying to stave off senility. Born in an apartheid America on Jackie Robinson’s twenty-eighth birthday, he was too young to appreciate Robinson’s career, the McCarthy era, or the rise of Elvis Presley. He started to become aware of the larger world during the 60s with its Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam war. He cleverly dodged the draft by enlisting in the Army. He still managed to become an infantryman and avoided Vietnam by volunteering for the other combat zone: the Korean DMZ. His father used to tell him, “You’re not stupid but you do some awfully stupid things.”
